Know your instructor

Clifford Anthony, recipient of several journalism awards, has more than 25 years experience in reporting and copy editing.

Anthony is a journalism faculty member at Cleveland State University and an adjunct English faculty member at Lakeland Community College, both in Ohio.

Anthony, a Cleveland resident, has two master's degrees - one  in Journalism from Kent State University, Kent, Ohio, and another in English from Bombay University in India.

Anthony is a recipient of Points-To-Certificate program from Lakeland Community College. To qualify for this teaching certificate, a candidate has to attend a series of workshops.

He was the Geauga County bureau chief for The News-Herald, a daily published from Willoughby, Ohio, before joining CSU as a full-time journalism faculty member in fall 2005.

Journalism awards

 2000 The Press Club of Cleveland. Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award, Best Business Writing, first place in non-daily category, for a four-part series on Y2K, published in Sun Newspapers, Cleveland, Ohio.

 2000 The Press Club of Cleveland. Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award. Best Business Section, second place in non-daily category, for Business  First (Sun Newspapers). All stories for Business First were written and laid out by Anthony.

 1999 The Press Club of Cleveland. Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award, Best Breaking News Report, second place in non-daily category, for a story on a pipe bomb found near a grocery store in South Euclid, published in Sun Newspapers.

 1998 The Press Club of Cleveland.  Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award, Best  Business Section, second place in non-daily category, for Business First (Sun Newspapers). All stories for Business First were written and laid out by Anthony.

 1996  Suburban Newspapers of America.  First place, Best Coverage of Aging Issues and Senior Citizens’ Lifestyle, for a three-part series on grandparents raising grandchildren, published in Sun Newspapers.

 1996 Neighborhood and Community Press Association of Greater Cleveland. First place, Best Series, for the above series.

1995 Suburban Newspapers of America.  First place, In-Depth Reporting, for a five-part series on race-relations in Northeast Ohio, published in Sun Newspapers.

1995 The Press Club of Cleveland. Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award, Public Service Reporting, second place,  for the above series.

 1992 Suburban Newspapers of America. Second place, In-Depth Reporting, for a four-part series on absentee landlords and housing code violations published in Sun Newspapers.

Teaching experience

Cleveland State University, Cleveland, Ohio. Journalism term-faculty since August 2005. I teach Media Writing, Editing, Advanced and Specialized reporting courses in addition to advising the student newspaper. I also served as an adjunct journalism faculty at CSU from spring 2000 to Aug. 2005.

   Lakeland Community College, Kirtland, Ohio. Adjunct faculty since spring 2001. I teach English 1120 (Argumentative/persuasive writing) and English 1110 online (Expository writing).

  Cuyahoga Community College, Cleveland, Ohio. Adjunct faculty, spring semester 2007. Taught English (Grammar and Composition).

  John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio. Adjunct faculty, fall semester 2000. Taught Media Writing.

   Journalism experience

The News-Herald, Willoughby, Ohio. (Daily) Bureau chief. Oversaw the news coverage of the newspaper’s Geauga County bureau. Joined the newspaper as a reporter and a copy editor in August 2000; promoted to bureau chief in June 2004; and resigned in August 2005 to pursue a full-time teaching career.

  Sun Newspapers, Cleveland, Ohio. (Weekly) General assignment reporter. Also edited Sun Newspapers’ business page. All stories for Business First were written and laid out by me. In addition, I covered two suburban cities and wrote a semimonthly general interest column. August 1994 to mid August 2000.

 The News-Herald, Willoughby, Ohio. (Daily) Part-time reporter. Covered local municipalities and courts. September 1993 to July 1994.

Prince George’s Journal, Maryland. (Daily) General assignment reporter. Covered the Prince George’s County Council. June 1993 to August 1993.

 Sun Newspapers, Cleveland, Ohio. (Weekly) General assignment reporter. Covered Cleveland City Hall, Cleveland Board of Education in addition to general stories. Also wrote a semimonthly general interest column. April 1990 to May 1993.

  News India, New York, NY. (Weekly) Associate editor. Reporting, feature writing, editing, rewriting and selecting stories from wire services, layout and headlines for the paper serving the U.S.  Asian-Indian community.  August 1986 to September 1989.

  Oman Daily Observer, Oman. (Daily) General assignment reporter with emphasis on covering embassies and business. June 1983 to June 1986.

  The Blitz group, Bombay, India. (Daily and weekly) Reporting and feature writing with focus on in-depth reporting. June 1980 to May 1983.

Leadership training

Participated in the 2007 Ted Scripps Leadership, which was held in June in Indianapolis, Ind., by the Society of Professional Journalists.
